Gerdan "Hrushka"

This gerdan is recreated from an early 20th-century piece originating from the village of Hrushka, now part of the Tlumach community in the Pokuttia ethnographic region of western Ukraine. Its composition is built around a traditional geometric motif with a rhythmic sequence of yellow elements set against a soft blue background — a visual language characteristic of Pokuttia beadwork of that era.
In Ukrainian ornamental tradition, repeating patterns like these were more than decoration. They reflected harmony, continuity, and the connection between generations — a way of bringing order, balance, and memory into everyday life.
This replica was recreated using archival photographs and beadwork schemes from a collection of some of the oldest gerdans preserved by the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum. A Comely UA replica, faithfully recreated from a historical source.

Symbolism:
 The geometric rhythm of this gerdan is rooted in repetition — one of the defining principles of Ukrainian ornamentation. Repeating forms create a sense of continuity, inner balance, and an invisible thread between generations of women who carried these traditions forward through craft.
The yellow motifs running through the center resemble grains or small points of light — symbols of vitality, warmth, harvest, and the continuation of life.
In traditional Ukrainian color symbolism, blue was associated with the sky, water, calmness, and inner harmony.
Yellow represented sunlight, abundance, life force, and warmth.
Together, these colors create a composition that feels both delicate and grounded — combining softness with resilience, and reflecting the quiet strength of feminine presence carried through Ukrainian cultural memory.
