This gerdan recreates a pattern documented in the book Ukrainian Folk Beaded Adornments by Olena Fedorchuk. The original ornament belongs to the beadwork tradition of Pokuttia in the first half of the 19th century. The design preserves the historical composition of the pattern — a rhythmic sequence of diamond and cross-like elements typical of Pokuttia gerdans. Traditional pieces from this region often relied on precise geometric repetition to create a balanced ornamental structure. In this interpretation, the color palette has been reimagined. The contrast of black and white emphasizes the geometry of the motif and gives the traditional structure a clear, contemporary presence.
The beaded band is paired with velvet ribbons, allowing the necklace to sit naturally on the body while maintaining the elongated form characteristic of a gerdan. Original design by Comely UA inspired by a historical pattern.

Dimensions: Materials:
• Beaded part: 30 cm (11.8 in)
• Total length: adjustable up to 40 cm (15.7 in)
• Width: 2 cm (0.8 in)
• Czech seed beads
• Durable nylon thread
• Velvet ties

Symbolism:
The ornament is built around a diamond–cross motif, a structure widely present in Ukrainian traditional ornamentation. According to Ukrainian ethnographic studies of ornament (including works by Olena Fedorchuk and Vira Svientsitska), the diamond shape is often associated with the image of a sown field and the symbolism of fertility.
When combined with a cross-like structure, the motif forms a visual sign of balance and an ordered world. Color strengthens the clarity of the ornament:
Black beads — traditionally used as a structural base in Ukrainian ornament, emphasizing form and depth.
White beads — associated with light and purity, creating contrast that highlights the geometry of the pattern.
Together, these elements create a piece in which a historical ornament continues to exist as a visual code of cultural memory and feminine identity.
