This gerdan is a contemporary interpretation of the ornamental traditions of Donetsk region, inspired by a Ukrainian embroidered ritual cloth over one hundred years old. The original towel was embroidered by the grandmother of Oleksa Tykhyi in Donbas. Years later, after his arrest, his mother, Mariia Kindrativna Tykha, gave it back to him as a reminder of home, family, and a Ukrainian identity that could not be erased.
Oleksa Ivanovych Tykhyi was a Ukrainian dissident, human rights defender, teacher, linguist, and co-founder of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. He stood for the protection of the Ukrainian language and openly resisted the forced russification of Donbas. After his death in a soviet labor camp, the embroidered towel was returned to his wife, Olha Tykha.
Because of this story, this piece exists as more than jewelry. It is a form of cultural memory — a reflection of Ukrainian Donbas, its heritage, and the people who fought to preserve their language, identity, and right to remain Ukrainian.
Rather than recreating a historical artifact, this gerdan reimagines Ukrainian ornamental heritage through a modern artistic lens — becoming a dialogue between memory, resilience, and contemporary identity. Original design by Comely UA.

Symbolism:
The ornament is built around symmetry and rhythmic repetition — one of the defining principles of Ukrainian ornamental art. The repeating diamond-shaped forms create a sense of continuity, balance, and inner structure, turning the pattern into a visual language of cultural memory.
Red — vitality, strength, dignity.
White — light, clarity, openness.
Blue — depth, memory, inner balance.
Black — grounding, continuity, connection between generations.
“Donechchyna” speaks about a culture whose voice continues to endure, even after attempts to silence it. It is about Donbas as part of Ukrainian cultural memory — and about heritage that does not remain locked away in archives, but continues to live today in forms that can still be worn, carried, and remembered.
