This gerdan is inspired by an ornamental motif taken from a women’s embroidered shirt dating from the late 19th to early 20th century from the Novhorod-Siverskyi district of the Chernihiv region — part of Eastern Polissia, where geometric ornament played an essential role in local embroidery traditions.
Rather than copying the past literally, this piece carries the logic of Ukrainian ornament into a contemporary form — preserving the quiet strength, precision of line, and distinctive rhythm of traditional Polissian design.Original design by Comely UA.

Dimensions: Materials:
• Beaded part: 31 cm (12.2 in)
• Width: 1.5 cm (0.59 in)
• Czech seed beads
• Durable nylon thread
• Adjustable ties with tassels

Symbolism:
Diamond and cross-like motifs are among the oldest geometric symbols in Ukrainian ornamental culture. In embroidery and beadwork, they were often associated with continuity of life, protection, the structure of the world, and the connection between generations.
Black — grounding, depth, ancestral memory.
White — clarity, light, inner purity.
Red — vitality, movement, energy, and dignity.
“Chernihivshchyna” is a modern continuation of Ukrainian women’s heritage — where traditional ornament lives on through a restrained, graphic, and timeless contemporary form.
